Get your students talking about their plans for the new year, next weekend, or an upcoming holiday.

Communicative Language Activities — Future plans

Will / Won’t / going to hope to do next year, summer, or during the upcoming holidays

  • Print and cut out at least two sets of the images.
  • Put students in groups. Give each group a set of images and ask them to brainstorm phrases and words to describe the activities on the cards.
  • Go over the phrases as a class. Note that they might use different phrases to describe these images – allow all suggested phrases that make sense.
  • Shuffle the cut out images.
  • Distribute images between students so that each student has at least 4-5.
  • Students mingle and tell each other what they will / won’t / hope to do this year or summer based on the images, e.g., ‘I might go zip lining’, ‘I definitely won’t play football’ ‘I am going to take an important exam in June’.
  • Students play and mingle until they find someone who has similar plans.

True / False

  • Print and cut out at least two sets of the images.
  • Put students in groups. Give each group a set of images and ask them to brainstorm phrases and words to describe the activities on the cards.
  • Go over the phrases as a class. Note that they might use different phrases to describe these images – allow all suggested phrases that make sense.
  • Shuffle the cut out images.
  • Put a deck of images face down at each table.
  • Students pull cards and make sentences about their future like ‘I’m going to walk my dong this weekend’. Other students at the table guess if the sentence is true or false.
  • The student with the most correct guesses wins.

My ideal weekend

  • Print and cut out at least two sets of the images.
  • Put students in small groups. Give each group a set of images and ask them to brainstorm phrases and words to describe the activities on the cards.
  • Go over the phrases as a class. Note that they might use different phrases to describe these images – allow all suggested phrases that make sense.
  • Shuffle the cut out images.
  • Tell students they can pick three images that they want to use to describe a great weekend.
  • Explain that two people can’t use the same card, so they have to negotiate with their teammates how to divide the cards. Remind them that they can write negative sentences too, like ‘I definitely won’t go to the beach because I hate sand’.
  • Set a fixed time limit for individual writing work.
  • When they finished writing, they tell their partner about their perfect weekend.
