EAP for the 21st century learner

This series from award-winning EAP (English for Academic Purposes) author Aylin Graves provides a set of lesson plans to enhance your students’ skills in Academic English. Each lesson consists of a worksheet and accompanying teacher’s notes including teaching tips. These lessons can be used sequentially or for stand-alone classes.

The 21st century demands a new set of skills from today’s university students so they may function as effective citizens in an increasingly complex world. While there are many skills and taxonomies available, this course takes as its starting point the 4 Cs Approach: Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking and Creativity. These skills are practised throughout lessons which revolve around 21st century literacies and themes.

While globalisation is changing every aspect of human experience in the 21st century, localisation is also emerging as a major trend. The world is growing smaller and more complicated at the same time. This necessitates a balanced approach in education so that the richness of local cultures and wisdoms may still be celebrated as we prepare global citizens. This balanced approach involves ‘glocalising’ our lessons. In other words, it involves teaching universal concepts through local means. The teacher’s notes in this course will suggest ways of doing this.

  • Hi Mkhossain,

Thanks for your feedback. This EAP course is not the same as IELTS so you cannot take it as a substitute where IELTS is required for admission. Could you please let us know more information about the programme you are applying for?

    Many thanks,
    The onestopenglish team
