The full set of 30 Business Top Trumps cards in our exclusive cut-out-and-keep format. This pack has been developed especially for students of business English by our very own Karen Richardson. Suitable for elementary- to advanced-level students, this game is guaranteed to inject some fun into your business-English classroom.
Lesson 1: Playing the game
In the first lesson, students get to know the Top Trumps cards, find out about the categories and learn how to play the game.
Lesson 2: Company structure
In the second lesson to accompany the Business Top Trumps card game, students will complete an organogram of the fictional company, talk about their own company’s structure and invent their own cards.
Lesson 3: Company profile
In the third lesson to accompany the Business Top Trumps card game, students discuss what kind of company the characters work for, answer questions about the company and write a company profile.
Lesson 4: Situations vacant
In the fourth lesson to accompany the Business Top Trumps card game, students discuss what skills, qualifications and experience are needed to do a particular job well, write CVs and formulate interview questions.
Lesson 5: Restructuring
In the fifth lesson to accompany the Business Top Trumps card game, students discuss the financial crisis, practise writing emails, use idioms and phrases to discuss a difficult business situation and role-play a company meeting.
Lesson 6: Moving premises
In the sixth lesson to accompany the Business Top Trumps card game, students discuss moving premises and decide which employees could work from home, make a decision on which department could be outsourced and practise writing an email to submit a tender.
Lesson 7: Networking and small talk
In the seventh lesson to accompany the Business Top Trumps card game, students talk about how to initiate and continue small talk with opening and follow-up questions, discuss a variety of small-talk topics and learn language to introduce a third person into a conversation.
Lesson 8: Negotiations
In the eighth lesson to accompany the Business Top Trumps card game, students can talk about a variety of negotiation topics, discuss their own negotiation experiences and act out a role-play in front of the class.
Lesson 9: Dilemmas
In this lesson to accompany the Business Top Trumps card game, students learn about dealing with dilemmas at work and how to be objective.
Lesson 10: Setting personal goals
In the tenth lesson to accompany the Business Top Trumps card game, students can talk about setting and achieving work-based goals, how happy they are in their work, and what changes could be made to improve their performance.
Lesson 11: Presentations
In the eleventh lesson to accompany the Business Top Trumps card game, students learn different ways of starting a presentation, to describe charts and graphs, and how to invite and deal with questions.
Lesson 12: Making proposals
In the twelfth lesson to accompany the Business Top Trumps card game, students learn about the language of corporate responsibility through future forms, conditionals and modals.
