This activity probably works best as a way of energizing a group, particularly after lunch!

Procedure

  • Ask the learners to divide into groups of 8-12 students, depending on the numbers in the class.
  • Then ask each group to form a circle.
  • They should then hold hands with two different people in the circle but not with the person on either side of them. It is also important to stress that their arms should not be crossed, so that they are holding hands with their left hand with someone on their left and with their right hand with someone on their right. The result will usually be a rather complicated-looking knot.
  • The next step is for them to unravel the knot without letting go of each other’s hands. The aim is to produce the circle again using teamwork and negotiation. There will be a certain amount of climbing, tunnelling and stretching. It may even be fun!

Tip: Encourage the learners to use English at all times. You could pre-teach vocabulary like 'climb over', 'go under', 'turn round', 'go back' and so on.
