To review can and can't for ability with a range of action verbs.

three little pigs

Procedure

1 Across the width of the board, stick pictures of well-known characters such as Cinderella, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, Snow White, the Three Little Pigs, Shrek, Mickey mouse, Buzz Lightyear, etc.

2 Down the length of the board, draw or stick pictures of different actions such as swimming, playing tennis/football/volleyball/the guitar/piano, walking, running, skiing, dancing, cooking, jumping, etc.

3 Now draw vertical lines down from each character and horizontal lines across from each action to make squares in the centre of the board.

4 Ask the students to choose a character and say what it can or can’t do. If they are unsure, ask them to guess. For example, Buzz Lightyear can fly. Mickey can’t swim. After they have said their sentence they should put either a tick or a cross in the appropriate box on the board.

5 When all the boxes on the board have been filled, students can use this activity to practise yes/no questions as if they were interviewing the characters or as if they wanted to know information about the characters. For example:

Can Snow White sing?

- Yes she can.

Can Mickey swim?

- No he can’t.

6 For an extension/homework, students could draw their favourite character and write simple sentences describing what they can and can’t do.
