Game Cards: Food & Dishes

Students love playing games in their free time, be it video, mobile or tabletop games. Numerous studies have also shown the importance and positive impact games can have on learning. Incorporating games in your classroom can help your learners develop a positive relationship with the language and English lessons. While working with games, the teacher’s role changes from an instructor to a guide. This helps reduce teacher talking time and makes the students the centre of the lesson.

What’s for Dinner? (All levels; practice description, indefinite pronouns)

• Ask students what their favourite dishes are and write a few down. When there’s a word students say in their native language, teach them what that dish is called in English.
• Go over vocabulary and check pronunciation by having students repeat after you.
• Students can play this game in pairs, trios, or small groups.
• Have students take a card and ask one of their classmates, What’s for dinner?
• Student with cards must describe their food item one clue at a time, giving their classmates a chance to guess in between:
  

                A: What’s for dinner?

                B: It’s something (hot/cold/spicy/sweet/…).

                A: Is it (soup)?

               B: Yes, it is! / No, it’s something…

• Play as many rounds as possible, correct possible mistakes at the end, anonymously if possible (I heard someone say...)
