A Time to Travel: England: Suffer and suffrage

Amber travels back to meet the leader of the suffragettes, Emmeline Pankhurst, and learn about why the right to vote is so important. In this lesson, students will: learn about Emmeline Pankhurst and the suffragettes; learn a range of language related to political struggle – protest, to bring about change, petitions, demonstration, politicians, equal rights, revolution, support, freedom, break the law, vote, take notice, women’s suffrage; practise extensive and intensive listening and a range of listening sub-skills; complete a memory recall comprehension task to consolidate the story and new language and have a discussion about political values using a variety of agreeing / disagreeing phrases.

  • Nice lesson, however, the suffragettes fought for the suffrage of all woman in the UK of Great Britain and N. Ireland, so it ought to be titled 'The UK: Suffer and Suffrage'! The women of N. Ireland, Wales and Scotland all fought for their rights and suffered the same horrors such as hunger strikes and force feeding!

    Thank you very much for your comment. You are quite right - the suffragette movement was of course for all women across the UK. The only reason we keep 'England' in the title is because it refers the group this 'Time to Travel' lesson is in.
