Anecdote: Toy story

Author: Nora Soto del Canto

Type: anecdote

Nora Soto del Canto had to hastily correct her Chilean students when a spot of child’s play unwittingly turned into adult entertainment.

Last year, on the occasion of the Barbie doll's 50th birthday, I gave my teenage students an article containing her story and some reading comprehension items.

I usually check my students' understanding by asking them, "What's this in Spanish?". So, when they came across the sentence, "Barbie was the first American adult doll in America" and I asked them what it meant, one of the girls said it was a muñeca para adultos: a doll for adults. I had to explain the difference, obviously!
