Video projects: How to download and upload a video
As part of the integrated skills series of video projects, Jackie McAvoy provides a comprehensive guide to downloading and uploading videos.
To download
Downloaded videos are in flash video format (that is .FLV not .WAV etc.). The first time you do this you need to download a flash video player. You can do this easily, and for free, from here: http://applian.com/flvplayer/?src=KeepvidPlay
When you have this installed, you can then play all the downloaded videos on your computer.
Now you’re ready:
1. Choose a video and copy the link in the browser. For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSdQ78auhIQ
Note: The YouTube site only shows YouTube videos. However, Google Video shows YouTube videos and videos from other sites too, so there’s a greater choice.
2. Open the website http://keepvid.com/, paste the link and click DOWNLOAD.
3. Then click ›› Download Link ‹‹
4. Click Save to Disk and then OK. The time it takes to download will depend on your computer, the speed of your Internet and the length of the video.
5. The video is now on your desktop. It’s called get-video so rename it and put it in a better place on your computer. You can also save it to disk (but remember that you need the flash video player to watch it).
To upload
1. Once your students have made their videos, they need to be uploaded so everyone can watch them. For this you need an account with YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/) or with Google Video (http://video.google.com/). Follow the instructions for either site to open an account.
2. In your account, both sites have an Upload button. Click this and follow the instructions.
3. In the title of the video, start with Onestopenglish and then the name of the video, for example: Onestopenglish Happy Feet review or Onestopenglish soap advertisement. This will make it a lot easier to find other videos made by students for this project.
