Methodology: The methodology challenge

The methodology challenge brings teachers with great ideas and the ability to put them down in words into the world of ELT publishing.

You choose one theme or problem from the onestopenglish forum and write a solution to answer the problem posed. This solution might involve an article in continuous prose or a series of tips and lesson ideas.

A typical challenge

Here is an example of the type of question that you might answer:

I am teaching adult learners of English. For the last class I am planning to make all groups meet and have a mixed English class. But I find it difficult to find activities that would be suitable for beginners and not too boring for intermediate students.

How to enter

Please just send your piece of writing to the Editor of onestopenglish by email. The address is webeditor@macmillan.com. Please tell us what question you are answering and in what area of the forum you found it.

The prize

We will publish one or two winning articles in this section of onestopenglish every month (depending on how many good answers we receive). All winners will receive a £100 fee plus three Macmillan methodology titles.

Note that we will be using this as a way of finding ELT writers for the future, just as we do in the lesson share competition.

What are we looking for?

We are aiming at practical rather than academic writing and for this reason we'd like you to find your themes in the onestopenglish forum.

All winning entries must be original work. We cannot accept articles that have been published or that are intended for publishing elsewhere.
While we do not stipulate any specific length for articles we do expect to award prizes for substantial replies that have taken a reasonable amount of time and thought to compose. Articles might include direct solutions in terms of ideas for lesson plans etc. In writing the reply to this type of problem please make suggestions for activities and lesson plans but also try to make explicit the methodological reasons underpinning your recommendations.
Please include a bibliography for all references and works cited.
Macmillan will own copyright and publishing rights to any winning articles but will only publish in consultation with the author.
