Assessment matters: Self-assessment and 'Can do' statements

In the final part of this series, Adrian Tennant takes a look at self-assessment and, in particular, ‘Can do’ statements: a current buzzword and term now employed by the Common European Framework (CEF).

Grammar: Can't you be more positive?

Author: Tom Swietlik

This is primarily a fluency-based lesson to develop students’ phrase-building skills with language chunks based on the keyword ‘can’t’.

Aims:

  • to develop phrase-building skills using can’t.
  • to expand knowledge of the use of can’t in sentences with a positive meaning.

This lesson works equally well with groups and individuals. An adapted one-to-one procedure and a follow-up activity are described after the group procedure.
