BULATS: Listening: Part 4: Longer multiple-choice listenings

This lesson, by Russell Whitehead, is designed to help you engage your students with Part 4 of the BULATS Listening test. This part appears three times in the Standard Test (as questions 33–50) and these tasks are included in the computer-based and online versions of BULATS.

Weekly news lesson 202: 26th August 2010: President of Haiti-in-waiting or singer with stars in his eyes?

The musician Wyclef Jean officially announced his intention to stand in Haiti's next presidential election at the beginning of August. In this article, he stated the reasons for his intention before Haiti's election board decided to reject his candidacy.

The train

This mini-play features a middle-aged couple, who are on a train from London Bridge to Dartford, on their way to a doctor's appointment. The lesson contains a downloadable MP3 audio file and a PDF with student worksheets and teacher's notes.

Experiments: Shape-shifting slime

In this experiment, students transform a boring polystyrene cup into something more interesting. Matching and gap-fill activities help students revise related vocabulary and verbs in the imperative. Students then discuss the outcome of the experiment with a partner and write a report using the past tense. Key vocabulary and practical teacher's notes are included.

Business Spotlight: Emotional roller coaster

This lesson, which is based on an article from Business Spotlight magazine, looks at the personal conflicts two managers faced as they took the most difficult management decisions of their careers. Teacher's notes cover reading and information exchange activities. Student activities include an information exchange activity and discussions.

New this month: Galápagos giant tortoise saved from extinction by breeding programme

Scientists have successfully reintroduced giant tortoises to the Galápagos island of Española. The population reached a low of 15 in the 1970s, due to sailors eating them and goats destroying their habitat, but is now thriving at around 2,000.

Project: Amazing world of animals

The Amazing world of animals, by Carol Read, is a project for Young Learners, designed to simultaneously build up learners’ language skills and knowledge of the animal kingdom. The project is divided into six lessons and leads to a final outcome of children creating a group e-zine/magazine with the title ‘Amazing world of animals’. In each lesson, children find out about different aspects of the animal world and produce a piece of work to include in their e-zine/magazine.
