Number one for English language teachers

Anecdote: Speak English at all times

Type: Anecdote

Assia Boulkroun feels proud of her self after a scary experience

I teach English in Algiers, Algeria.

Last year, I was teaching Intermediate class in the evening from 18:00 to 20:00. At 19:40 an earthquake happened. I didn't feel it because I was standing up but the students felt it as they were sitting down. I told them to go under tables and not to panic because there were 15 of us and the door was closed.

Some of the students listened to me as others left the classroom. I remember one student was shouting

'Earthquake! Earthquake!'

But the funniest thing was the fact that I was still speaking in English because we have a rule in this school to use only English. If the students use another language they have to pay a fine and it is double for teachers.

I have never been so brave in my life as I was that day. I waited until all the students went out of the class. I was astonished by my behavior.
