Anecdote: One too many?

Type: Anecdote

Eddie Conlon is enlightened by some sober wisdom in his classroom.

I was coming to the end of a heavy session on countable and uncountable nouns and the use of a, an and some with a group of adult learners, when a student asked me if beer was countable or uncountable.

I was intrigued by the question and where it was taking the class, so I turned it around and asked him what he thought. He answered that it had to be uncountable. When I asked why, he answered that every time he had been to a party he could never remember how many beers he had drunk so it definitely wasn’t countable! This lightened up an otherwise heavy grammatical session.
